Barnes Community Cemetery – 03/11/2012

by on Mar.12, 2012, under Stuff

We took a drive up to Nabb, Indiana to check on some head stones in this cemetery for some family friends that have moved away.  This was directly in the path of the EF4 tornado that hit Henryville and subsequently Chelsea.  It was surrounded by woods, which now are nothing more than uncut fire wood.  I can only imagine how Proudly the one single cedar tree in the middle must have looked ( first image).  As you stand on the top of the hill and look around at the destruction, the extend of nature’s wrath becomes apparent.

What the fuck Dick?

by on Nov.16, 2011, under Stuff

So today I was looking on http://www.opencongress.org to find out some information about H.R.3261 – Stop Online Piracy Act and S.968 – PROTECT IP Act of 2011.  After sending the appropriate letters to my congress critters,  I was poking around and I saw that Senator Richard Lugar has 20 sponsored bills.  I got curious and started looking around.  That’s when I saw that he was sponsoring legislation that makes absolutely no sense.

One of the items,

S.Res.190 – A resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.  Ok, this one makes sense.  He’s an Indiana Senator, so he should be supporting Indiana businesses.

Let’s looks at the next one:

S.Res.153 – A resolution recognizing the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.  Really?!?!?  Come on Dick.  What the fuck were you thinking when you decided this would be good legislation to sponsor.  Hey it happened and I’m sure there’s not a person over 40 who doesn’t remember it.  Exactly why do we need a resolution to recognize the anniversary of something that happened halfway around the world.  Why does this  even need  to be discussed.

Another resolution is

S.Res.135 – A resolution remembering the 1 year anniversary of the April 10, 2010, plane crash that claimed the lives of the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and 94 others, while they were en route to memorialize those Polish officers, officials, and civilians who were massacred by the Soviet Union in 1940.  Again, really?!?!?  Why should the US residents care?

You know what Dick.  Why don’t you try and focus on fixing things that are wrong in this state and this country?  You are elected  to represent US and it looks like you’re just goofing off.  Why don’t you try to play nice with others and get something done instead of riding the political party pony.

A new Fall semester approaches

by on Aug.07, 2011, under Stuff

And I am getting ready to teach E103 – The Art and Culture of Electronic Gaming again.  This will be the third year that I have taught the class.   The class should be a little different and better this year, as I have some new tools to spice it up. I am looking forward to the discussions we will be having.

You will be missed…

by on May.24, 2010, under Stuff

A great man was laid to rest today.  He wasn’t my father.  He wasn’t my uncle.  In fact he was not related directly to me.  He was my wife’s uncle, William Fowle III.

Bill was not your average guy.  He was a large guy and took up a lot of space.  Yet, you never were uncomfortable in his space.  You just knew that as long as you were close to him, nothing could ever happen to you.  He was one of the most generous people I will ever meet.

Anyone was welcome to his house.  He was a gracious host and willing to share what he had.  My wife and I would go over and help him with his technology.  We were always greeted with a hug and a handshake. He always wanted to make sure that we were comfortable before we would get down to business.  He was always curious about what was going on and would often sit next to us, asking questions to help him understand what was going one.

Over the years we helped him set up several laptops, a couple of desktops, digital cameras,  an iPhone, and a Kindle.  He was always interested in what we were doing, even if it was only doing updates.  Often he would talk about wanting to do things and we would discuss ways in which to accomplish them.  Often, he would have a device and not fully understand what he could do with it.  He always liked having music playing and was completely delighted when I was able to setup his computer and iPhone to sync his music.

He also liked to take pictures.  We spent an afternoon showing him how to get images from his camera and saving them to his computers.  He also loved to print his favorites and had images on the walls, many depicting favored moments.

Once, I expressed concern about how much I was charging him for doing work, which I would have done for free.  He said, “I’m not paying you for doing the work.  I’m paying you because you know what to do.”

That was classic Bill Fowle.  He will be missed by many, myself included.  Rest in peace, Bill.

Motorcycles

by on Mar.25, 2010, under Stuff

I have been wanting to get a motorcycle for some time now.  I want it as a daily driver, so that I can save some money when the weather is nice.  I had one when I was 19 or so and I do love riding them.  I keep watching the Louisville area Craigslist, but holy crap!  You would think that you could get a old, used motorcycle for next to nothing, but the cheapest one I saw was nearly $1500.  You can get a new one for $3000-$4000.  I just can’t understand why there’s not any bargains when buying a motorcycle.  I’ve bought functioning cars for less.

A topic for a new class or presentation…

by on Mar.04, 2010, under Stuff

I was having a discussion with a faculty member yesterday and our conversation  lead me to think about a new topic for a presentation or class topic.  The topic is “What Your Kids Won’t Tell You about Playing Online Games.”  My thinking is that many parents allow their children to play various kinds of on-line games, but they don’t fully understand what exactly happens during game play.  Some parents simply do not care and this would not be for them.  It would be for those parents who don’t realize that their children could be exposed to profanity, racism, and just general bad behavior while playing on-line games.
